Biographies

Toru Shimizu, Ph.D. (清水徹)

Professor, Keio University, and Director, Japan Embedded Systems Technology Association (JASA)

Dr. Shimizu received Ph.D. degree from The University of Tokyo in 1986. After 28-year career of the R&D of semiconductor industry in Mitsubishi Electric and Renesas, he was awarded as an IEEE Fellow from the contribution of advanced microprocessor development and joined Keio University in 2014. He has been serving Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference (A-SSCC) in the committee from 2005. He has been working for industry conference and trade shows in Japan, ET and ET West, as an executive committee member. From the experiences, he started and is working for the Smart Tourism Workshop with Dr. Wu and Dr. Matsubara to help Taiwan-Japan collaboration.

Hidetoshi Akiyama (秋山英俊)

Coordinator, National Institute of Technology, Kagawa College Takuma Campus Collaborative Education Center of Emerging Technology

Mr. Akiyama was working in the Shikoku Instrumentation Co. Ltd until 2014, a subsidiary of Shikoku Electric Power. His primary responsibility was to develop Automatic Test Equipment (ATE) for semiconductor companies, such as Mitsubishi Electric and Renesas. He hopes to introduce his hometown Mitoyo to visitors abroad and create friendships between Mitoyo citizens and overseas communities.

Yukinori Misaki (三﨑幸典)

Professor, National Institute of Technology, Kagawa College Departmental dean of Electronic Systems Engineering
Chief of Collaborative Education Center of Emerging Technology

Prof. Misaki is Dean of the Electrical Systems Engineering Department at The National Institute of Technology, Kagawa College. He earned his Ph.D. in Engineering from Nagaoka University of Technology. He has been the head coach of the Robocon (National Robot Contest for Technical College Students in Japan) team at NIT-Kagawa, Takuma Campus for about two decades. His team has achieved a new record of 13 consecutive appearances at Nationals in which they are also 4-time champions of the event. In 2006, they took the first ever “Double Crown”, where they not only won the contest but also took home the “Superior Honor Award”. In regards for achievements, his team received “The Grand Award for Design” from the Japanese Prime Minister in 2007. His research interests include (i) respiration sensors, (ii) heat dissipation, (iii) spectrum imaging applications and (iv) engineering education methods. He has also been working together with Mitoyo City to promote collaborations in industry, academia and government.

Naoya Iwamoto (岩本直也)

Assistant Professor, National Institute of Technology, Kagawa College, Department of Electronic Systems Engineering

Dr. Naoya Iwamoto received his PhD degree in electronic engineering from the University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo in 2012. After finishing his PhD study, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Japan Atomic Energy Agency from 2012 to 2013, and at the University of Oslo, Norway from 2014 to 2015. His research field is in wide bandgap semiconductor physics and devices. From February 2016, he is an assistant professor at National Institute of Technology, Kagawa College, where he also studied when he was a teenager. Now his passions are not only for studying semiconductors but also for encouraging young students to visit abroad to expand their visons.

Hirokazu Miyazaki (宮崎洋一)

Chief, Policy Planning Division, Mitoyo City

Mr. Miyazaki graduated from Kinki University. He was working as a kuruma shrimp farming technician at a local company until he was employed by Mitoyo City in 1992. Since then he has been in charge of system engineering, local promotion, industry development, international exchange, and tourism development for the City of Mitoyo. He is working hard to get more visitors to come for the Setouchi Art Festival 2016 which will be held on Awashima Island in Mitoyo.

Akiyoshi Kuramoto (倉本明佳)

Assistant Chief, Policy Planning Division, Mitoyo City

Mr. Kuramoto is an assistant Chief of Policy Planning Division, Mitoyo City. He was working nine years in Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd, and retired from the company in 2013. He takes charge of industry development of Mitoyo City. Principally, he supports small and medium sized enterprise, promotes industry-academia collaboration.

Yukari Ishii (石井紫)

Managing Director of the Mitoyo International Exchange Association

Ms. Ishii graduated from Nothumbria University and Chelsea College of Art and Design in the UK where she gained both a BA and a PGDip in fine art. After five years’ experience studying in the UK, she came to the Mitoyo International Exchange Association in 2007. Ms. Ishii is also a member of the Mitoyo City Tourism Master Planning Board and she is very passionate about introducing her community to the wider world.

Aria Iwasawa (岩澤ありあ)

Researcher in Graduate School of System Design and Management, Keio University

Aria Iwasawa received her bachelor and master's degree in Keio University, majoring in physics and systems engineering. She has worked at Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and was responsible for the production of the guidance and navigation hardware for satellites. Currently, she engages in promoting activities integrating social services using space systems and geospatial information.

Ariel Wang (王海寧)

Master student in System Design and Management, Keio University

Ariel Wang received her bachelor degree in Foreign Languages and Literatures at National Taiwan University. Then she continued her study at Keio University in September 2015, majoring in System Design and Management. She is now doing the research of the tourism between Japan and Taiwan.

Cheng-Wen Wu (吳誠文)

Tsing Hua Distinguished Chair Professor, National Tsing Hua University
Senior Vice President for research, National Tsing Hua University

Cheng-Wen Wu is a Tsing Hua Distinguished Chair Professor and Senior Vice President for research at National Tsing Hua University (NTHU). He received the BSEE degree from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, in 1981, and the MS and PhD degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), in 1985 and 1987, respectively. Since 1988, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering, NTHU. He was on leave from NTHU, serving as the General Director of the SOC Technology Center (STC) at ITRI from 2007 to 2009, and the Vice President of ITRI and General Director of ICL from 2010 to 2014. Dr. Wu received the Distinguished Teaching Awards (twice) from NTHU, the Outstanding Electrical Engineering Professor Award from the Chinese Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Distinguished Research Awards (three times) from National Science Council, the Industrial Collaboration Awards (twice) from the Ministry of Education (MOE), the Academic Award from MOE, the Continuous Service Award and Outstanding Contribution Award from the IEEE Computer Society, the Distinguished Industrial Collaboration Award from NTHU, the National Invention Award (Silver Medal) from Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the TECO Award. He became a Golden Core Member of the IEEE Computer Society in 2006. In 2013, he received the National Endowed Chair Professorship from MOE. He is a life member of the CIEE, a life member of Taiwan IC Design Society, and a Fellow of the IEEE.

Wen-Chi (Kevin) Yang (楊文旗)

Chief Operations Officer, Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL), ITRI

Mr. Wen-Chi (Kevin) Yang received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University, Taiwan, R.O.C., in 1981 and 1984, respectively. He has worked in ITRI almost for 25 years. Currently, he is Chief Operations Officer of ICL/ITRI, in charge of the division for Strategy & Business and division for Network-Based Services Technology.

Chong Yie Chang (張中一)

Project Manager, Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL), ITRI

Mr. Chang, Chong Yie received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering from National Chung Cheng University, Taiwan, R.O.C. in 1998 and the IMBA degree from IE Business School, Madrid, Spain in 2010, respectively. He has worked in ITRI almost for 10 years. Currently, he is a project manager of ICL/ITRI, in charge of projects such as finance technology, smart home, and surveillance.

TingTing Hwang (黃婷婷)

Dr. TingTing Hwang is Professor of Computer Science, National Tsing Hua University. Currently, she is taking a leave and serving as Minister without Portfolio in Examination Yuan. She received her Ph. D. degree in computer science from Pennsylvania State University in 1990. Her research interests include automation of VLSI design and computer architecture. She served as Chair, Department of Computer Science from 2006 to 2009 and Vice Dean, College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, from 2010 to 2014. She was awarded Distinguished Professor of National Tsing Hua University in 2006 and Distinguished Teaching Awards from Ministry of Education and National Tsing Hua University in 1993, 1999 and 2004, respectively.

Hung-Kuo Chu (朱宏國)

Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science, National Tsing Hua University

Hung-Kuo Chu was born at Yilan, Taiwan, 1981. He received Ph.D degrees from Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Cheng Kung University in 2010. His research interests focus on Shape Understanding, Smart Manipulation, Perception-based Rendering, Recreational Graphics and Human Computer Interaction.

Chih-Tsun Huang (黃稚存)

Associate Director, IC Design Technology Center (DTC), National Tsing Hua University

Chih-Tsun Huang received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2000. Since 2004, he has been with the Department of Computer Science, NTHU, where he is currently an Associate Professor. He was a visiting researcher with the ECE Department, University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) from 2011 to 2012. He also serves as the Deputy Director of the Design Technology Center (DTC), NTHU, from 2012. His research interests include design and test technologies for multi-core architectures and systems, and robustness VLSI computing, including security and cryptography designs, error-correcting codecs, and system-level debug and performance monitoring.

Shu-Wan (Cecilia) Lin (林淑宛)

Administrator, Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL), ITRI

Shu-Wan (Cecilia) Lin has worked with ITRI since February 2007. Prior to joining the ITRI, she served as secretary and project assistant at the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, National Tsing Hua University. In addition, Cecilia has administrative experiences of two years in Pig Research Institute Taiwan.

Chien-Wei Yeh (葉千瑋)

Chien-Wei Yeh has worked at National Tsing Hua University since April 2014. She served as project assistant at the Office of Student Affairs, Tunghai University previously and has administrative experiences of two years.

Joshua Tzeng (曾文興)

Joshua Tzeng received the bachelor and master degrees in Mechanical Engineering from National Taiwan University, in 1992 and 1994, respectively. He worked as a Project Manager with Acer Peripherals Inc., from 1995 to 1997, and IT Manager with Acer Peripherals Mexicana de cv, and Acer Peripherals America, Inc., in 1997 and 1998 respectively. From 1999 to 2001, he joined GuruFarm.com Crop. as the CTO. From 2001 to 2012, he became the Managing Director of BenQ Guru Software Co., Ltd.

Ming-Der Shieh (謝明得)

Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University

Ming-Der Shieh received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan, in 1984, the M.S. degree in electronic engineering from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan, in 1986, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing, in 1993. From 1988 to 1989, he was an engineer at United Microelectronic Corporation, Taiwan. After receiving the Ph.D. degree, he joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, National Yunlin University of Science & Technology (NYUST) as an associate professor. He has received teaching awards from NYUST in 1998 and was the department chairman from 1999 to 2002. Since 2002, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), where he is currently a professor. His research interests include VLSI design and testing, VLSI for signal processing, and digital communication. Dr. Shieh was the program co-chair and general co-chair of Asian Test Symposium in 2004 and 2009, respectively. He was also the chairman of Tainan Chapter (2009~2010), IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and the associated editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems – Part I (2010~2012). He serves as the technical committee member in several international conferences. Dr. Shieh joined Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL) of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) as the deputy general director from 2010 to 2014. He is now the chairman of EE department of National Cheng Kung University.

Soon-Jyh Chang (張順志)

Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University

Soon-Jyh Chang received his Ph.D. degrees in Electronic Engineering from National Chiao-Tung University (NCTU), Taiwan, in 2002. He joined the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Taiwan, in 2003, and he has been a professor there since 2011. Dr. Chang has served as chair of IEEE SSCS Tainan Chapter during 2009-2012. He has also served as the Director of Electrical Laboratories, NCKU, during 2011-2014. His research interests include design, testing, and design automation for analog and mixed-signal circuits.

Jeen-Shing Wang (王振興)

Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University

Dr. Jeen-Shing Wang is a distinguished professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO, in 1996 and 1997, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree from Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN, in 2001. While the core of his research explores the development of wearable devices, he also specializes in bio-signal and inertial signal processing, computational intelligence, data mining, and system optimization. He was awarded Ta-You Wu Memorial Award from Ministry of Science and Technology in 2010, and Outstanding and Exceptional Academia-Industry Cooperation Awards from National Cheng Kung University in 2015 and 2016, respectively. He have supervised students to win many awards including several championships from national and worldwide competitions such as Microsoft Imagine Cup. Dr. Wang currently serves as directors of Innovation & Practice Factory, Heart Science & Medical Devices Research Center, and Computational Intelligence & Learning Systems Lab.

Jen-Wei Huang (黃仁暐)

Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University

Jen-Wei Huang received the BS and PhD degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University, Taiwan in 2002 and 2009 respectively. He was a visiting scholar in IBM Almaden Research Center from 2008 to 2009 and was an assistant professor in Yuan Ze University from 2009 to 2012. He is now an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. He majors in computer science and is familiar with data mining. His research interests include data mining, mobile computing, and bioinformatics. Among these, social network analysis, progressive mining, mining time series, and multimedia data mining are his special interests. In addition, some of his research are on data broadcasting, privacy preserving data mining, e-learning and bioinformatics.

Bo-Yu Chou (周柏妤)

Assistant, Department of Electrical Engineering, National Cheng Kung University

Po-Yu Chou has worked at National Cheng Kung University since Nov. 2004. She is a Project Assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering.
